Like many other items in the meat case, the sausage category has enjoyed growth in dollar sales despite declines in units and volume sold as food price inflation has many Americans feeling more stretched on their food dollar. Dinner sausage sales hit $404 million for May 2023, according to Circana retail sales data, down a modest 0.1% from the same time last year. Breakfast sausage endured a sharper decline of -2.6%, with sales of $155 million. Hot dogs had $277 million in sales for May 2023, a drop of -0.5% from 2022.
