In our cover feature, Andrew Pansulla of Chemours writes about “Designing Your Refrigerant-Management Plan.” He notes that “while regulations such as the Kigali Amendment and the AIM Act have not achieved a total phase-out of HFCs, the need for lower-GWP solutions is evident.” Pansulla offers advice on how to develop a refrigerant-management plan. Also in this issue, Susan Hammock of Alfa Laval Inc. explores how plate heat exchangers can help some companies improve their process efficiency. Benefits such as minimized downtime and less heat transfer loss due to fouling are possible, as she explains in “Efficiency Matters.”

How to use an offset to correct for steady-state errors such as conduction and thermal radiation is the focus of an article by Bill Bergquist of Burns Engineering Inc. Both instrument and installation errors can be present in temperature measurement applications, he notes. An offset is not always the right answer: Simply “using an offset to correct for sensor errors without knowing if the sensor is good can mask a serious problem,” he writes. After an appropriate evaluation of the sensor and installation, however, an offset can help address steady-state errors, and he offers a technique to try.

Boiler cleaning is the focus of an article from the engineering team at Goodway Technologies. Like most process equipment, routine maintenance is the path to a boiler that operates at its highest efficiency. The boiler type as well as the level and type of fouling influence the type of cleaning equipment chosen.
